Terms of use
These terms describe what ReturnBooks is, what it is not, and the basic ground rules for using it. A formal legal agreement will be published before general availability — this is a pre-launch draft to set expectations clearly.

1. What ReturnBooks is
ReturnBooks is a software service for organizing business records. You upload receipts, statements, invoices, and notes; ReturnBooks stores them, helps extract structured fields, and lets you review and categorize them for your books.
2. Recordkeeping only
ReturnBooks is recordkeeping software. It does not file taxes, run payroll, process payments, or replace your accountant.
Connecting a bank is optional and read-only. ReturnBooks uses Plaid to import transactions and never receives or stores your bank login credentials; it does not hold, move, transfer, or process money. Where the product has "payroll" features, they are recordkeeping for payroll documents only — no money is sent and no filings are made.
You can disconnect a bank connection at any time. On disconnect, ReturnBooks asks Plaid to remove our access (item/remove) where supported, deletes the stored access token, and stops future syncing and import. Transactions you already imported, and records you created from them, may remain for your recordkeeping unless you delete them in the app or request deletion through support. ReturnBooks keeps data only as long as needed to provide the service, meet legal obligations, resolve disputes, prevent abuse, and maintain records you ask us to keep; you can request account or data deletion through support.
3. Not professional advice
ReturnBooks is not your accountant, bookkeeper, tax advisor, attorney, payroll provider, or financial advisor. Output from the product — including AI-assisted suggestions, categories, totals, and reports — is for your review and your own decision-making. You are responsible for verifying records and consulting qualified professionals for accounting, tax, legal, payroll, and financial advice.
4. Your responsibilities
- You are responsible for the accuracy of the records you keep in ReturnBooks and for the use you make of them.
- You are responsible for safeguarding your account credentials. Do not share your password.
- Please do not upload protected health information (PHI) or data subject to HIPAA. ReturnBooks is not designed for that data.
- Please do not paste full social security numbers, full tax identification numbers, full bank account numbers, full card numbers, or other highly sensitive identifiers into free-text fields where they are not needed.
- Do not use ReturnBooks for activity that is illegal, abusive, or that infringes on the rights of others.
5. No money movement
ReturnBooks does not initiate transfers, send money to vendors, pay employees, or remit taxes. Any totals shown in reports or exports are informational and reflect what you have entered or accepted into your records.
6. Subscription and billing
Pricing is shown on the Pricing page. Subscription billing is handled by Stripe, our payment processor. ReturnBooks never sees your card number — Stripe collects it on a Stripe-hosted page.
You can cancel your subscription or update your payment method yourself in the Stripe billing portal, which you can open from Settings → Billing. See the Refund policy for how refunds are handled.
7. Acceptable use
You agree not to: attempt to access another company's records, attempt to circumvent access controls, run automated scrapers against the service, upload malware, attempt to abuse AI features in ways that violate the AI provider's terms, or otherwise interfere with the operation of the service for other users.
8. AI-assisted features
ReturnBooks may use third-party AI and OCR providers to suggest fields from your uploaded documents. Suggestions can be wrong and are not financial advice. You review and accept suggestions before they become records. See the Privacy page for what is sent to these providers.
9. Disclaimer and limitation
The service is provided on an "as is" basis. To the fullest extent permitted by law, ReturnBooks disclaims warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement, and will not be liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from use of the service. Final terms will be set in the formal agreement published before general availability.
10. Termination
You can stop using ReturnBooks at any time. We may suspend or terminate access for material violations of these terms, abuse of the service, or non-payment once billing is live. We will make reasonable efforts to let you export or retrieve your records before any termination we initiate.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the product matures. Material changes will be communicated through the app or by email. The final, formal terms — including the governing law and dispute resolution clauses — will be published before general availability.
12. Contact
Questions about these terms: support contact will be added before public launch. See the Support page for current ways to reach us.
